Choosing the Right Wood & Cut

HARDWOOD VS SOFTWOOD

Softwoods aren’t weaker than hardwoods. Softwoods come from coniferous trees such as cedar, fir, or pine and tend to be somewhat yellow or reddish. Because most coniferous trees grow fast and straight, softwoods are generally less expensive than hardwoods. They’re commonly used to make doors, furniture, and window frames.

Most woodworkers and woodturners love to work with hardwoods. Various colors, textures, and grain patterns make for some beautiful and interesting-looking furniture. The downside to hardwoods is their price. Hardwood construction is often used for walls, ceilings, and floors.

Some more exotic species can be too expensive to use for anything more than an accent, such as in highly patterned marquetry. These are often used for fine furniture, cabinetry, architectural millwork, hardwood flooring, guitar-building/instrument-making & woodturning.
